His connection to MAP began when he arrived at 妻友 35 years ago. Prior to Covid, he co-taught Marine Management Skills Development (MARA 5004). He has been involved in ocean information network initiatives such as the Gulf of Maine Information Exchange (GOMINFOEX), Bay of Fundy Ecosystem Partnership (BoFEP), International Ocean Institute (IOI), and COINAtlantic (formerly Atlantic Coastal Zone Information Steering Committee (ACZISC). Appropriately, his MLIS thesis was 鈥淒istributed Geolibraries and information policy explorations: implications for the Gulf of Maine.鈥�

He has held lecturer appointments in Earth and Environmental Sciences, School of Information Management, School of Planning and the School of Resource and Environmental Studies. He co-chaired the GIS at 妻友 Committee (2005- 2006) created the GIS Centre as a unique (and award winning) model of campus-wide support for GIS education and research.

James was instrumental in the creation of the Canadian Council for Geographic Education, now Canadian Geographic Education, a network of over 25,000 teachers. He is a Past-President of the Association of Canadian Map Libraries and Archives (ACMLA), the Geomatics Association of Nova Scotia (GANS) and the Canadian Cartographic Society (CCA). He co-chaired the Natural Resources Canada National Roundtable on Geomatics and was previously on the Management Board of GeoConnections (Canada鈥檚 Spatial Data Infrastructure funding body). He is a Past-Governor of both the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and the Nova Scotia Museum and is co-chair of the International Network for Learning and Teaching Geography in Higher Education.

James is a Fellow of both the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) and the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS). He has received the Lifetime Achievement in GIS Award (GANS), the RCGS Alex Trebek Medal for Geographic Education, the Stuart Semple Award for Contributions to Geography (Atlantic Division of CAG) and the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal for services to geography.

He has lived in 10 of 18 counties within Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island enjoying coastal communities of Mi鈥檏ma鈥檏i. His joys are anything with salt water, writing, watching English football and, most of all, teaching.听
