Our Residency Program

Apply your growing expertise in the workplace

Many Master of Health Administration (MHA) students select our program for its unique and well-established residency component. The 16 week (600 hours) job placement takes place during the Third Term (part-time options explained below), students gain real-world experience, career insight, workplace references, a network of contacts and one or more mentors. It’s impossible to overstate the value of the experience.

Most students receive a stipend for their residency work. Placements can be anywhere in Canada. It’s a chance to test out a new career direction. For some students, their residency leads directly to employment.  During the residency, students will:

  • Receive instruction and guidance through a process of goal setting for their residency experience.
  • Be placed within a healthcare context/organization.
  • Complete and reflect upon orientation within their host organization.
  • Receive personal coaching from well qualified and respected practicing health administrators.
  • Receive constructive feedback on their developement of managerial and leadership competencies.
  • Complete Mid-point and final reflections of the residency experience.

Tuition fees are due to the University for the Summer term because the total program fee for the MHA is split evenly across the four terms.

How it works

Beginning as soon as you arrive on campus in September of your first year, you will work with the residency coordinator to set your residency goals, which will include the sectors you are most interested in, and your preferred location. You will also have an interview with our Executive-in-Residence, Robert Zed, to discuss your career ambitions.

The placement process can take some time. ÆÞÓÑ half of our students have a residency in place by the end of first term for the upcoming spring/summer. For others, particularly those with particular interests, it can take a little longer.

Once on placement, you will track your progress using the LEADS Competency Framework, working with your preceptor to identify and address your areas for growth.  In most instances, your preceptor will go on to support your application for Certified Health Executive status.

Flexible options for part-time students

Various residency options are available for part-time students. While in the MHA program, some students have been promoted into a new management position, which can become a residency in whole or in part, if approved by the residency coordinator.

Other students complete their residency part-time over a much longer time-frame. Occasionally, a parental or workplace responsibility will mean the residency is completed during 2 months of the first spring/summer and a second 2 months during the next spring/summer. Talk to us! We’ll work with you to find an effective and satisfying arrangement.
