From Imposter to Empowered: Addressing the Imposter Phenomenon

As high as 82% of individuals experience the imposter phenomenon throughout their careers (Bravata et al., 2019). The imposter phenomenon, a term coined by Clance & Imes (1978), is the “subjective experience of perceived self-doubt in one's abilities and accomplishments compared with others, despite evidence to suggest the contrary” (Walker & Saklofske, 2023). More recent interpretations of this experience shift the focus from “fix-the-individual” to “fix-the-institution” with the concept of imposterization – institutional policies, practices, and interactions that make individuals question their intelligence, competence, and sense of belonging (Gutiérrez & Cole, 2023).

As a part of the Resilient Classroom series, you will learn in this in-person session how to:

Identify the characteristics of the imposter phenomenon as experienced by instructors
Describe how impostorization manifests in academia (e.g., microaggressions, grateful guest syndrome, invisibility and inclusion taxations)
Explain the factors that contribute to the imposter phenomenon and imposterization in academia (e.g., systemic discrimination, gender)

This session will provide a safe space to share personal experiences if you wish. We will collectively brainstorm strategies to better prevent and mitigate the impacts of the imposter phenomenon, as well as first steps to chip away at the structural and systemic factors that perpetuate imposterization in academia.

Mental Health 101 - Recognizing and Responding to Students in Distress

In any given year 1 in 5 Canadians will experience a mental illness, and according to Statistics Canada youth aged 15-24 are the most likely group to suffer the effects of a mental illness, substance dependency and suicide. Considering most university students are within this age group it is essential that those working with University students are provided the necessary knowledge and resources to recognize and respond to students in distress.

MH101 is a short yet informative presentation developed for university faculty and staff to increase awareness and understanding of mental illness and mental health problems, thus increase your confidence in supporting students.

Hands-On Intro to genAI for Teaching

Dual delivery (in-person location, Killam Library, Room B400*)

This session introduces generative artificial intelligence (genAI) to instructors and teaching assistants with limited experience. We'll cover what genAI is and how it works, giving you a foundation for thinking about how it might shape your interactions with students and the design of activities and assignments in your own courses.

The second half of the session is dedicated to basic prompting techniques, with hands-on practice creating teaching materials, so you can start imagining how AI might support parts of your teaching labour.

This is a dual-delivery session—attend in person or join online. If attending in person, bring a laptop if you’d like to participate in the hands-on activities. All participants, whether in person or online, should have ready access to an AI tool before the session; we recommend Microsoft Copilot Chat, given our institutional access to this tool.
